With the popularity of the Internet and the expense of going out on the town growing, it’s becoming more challenging for people of any age to make friends. Even teens and college students, who have the regular attendance to school to make them socialize, are limited by cliques and other differences. So how is a person to meet people and make friends these days?
Enjoy Things in Common
Seeking out others with common hobbies is one of the easiest and most enduring ways to make friends. Because you’re both interested in the same activities, you will naturally have something to talk about, so awkwardness won’t be as much of a problem for shy people to overcome. Also, you can meet up and do your hobby together, which mixes up your schedule in a fun way.
Embrace Differences
Differences are the reason people separate themselves and others into social cliques. Unfortunately, only knowing people who are like you means you’re missing out on some potentially great friendships you would have had if you had been brave enough to venture outside of your usual social circle. Having something in common is great, but you don’t have to have everything in common! Appreciate and respect your friends’ unique qualities and they will respect and appreciate yours more as well.
Be Daring
If your biggest obstacle to making friends is nowhere to go to meet people, be brave and take the first step. Take a new class, go to local events, and have fun!
